Back to School Letter from Principal, Elise Catanese

Dear West Orient Students, Parents, and Guardians:

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year!  It’s hard to believe that it’s August already and the start of the school year is just around the corner. Please take a moment to read the documents attached to this letter as they contain important information for the start-up of the 2017-18 school year. You will find school supply lists, immunization requirements, Lifetouch photo packets, bus routes, fee information, school office hours and contacts, yearly calendars, fundraiser details, and more!

Our school theme this year is “Use the FORCE: Friendships, Opportunities, Respect, Cooperation, Excellence.”  At West Orient, our common goal is to prepare every student for success, NO EXCUSES! We want each and every student to improve, grow, and achieve, but we know we can not accomplish this goal alone. We believe it takes the “FORCE” from all stakeholders—parents, students, staff, and the community— to accomplish our goals with the greatest success.

Student registration will be on Tuesday, August 22, 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Please note that school pictures will be taken during registration. We strongly encourage you to register your child at this time to ensure a smooth enrollment.

Communication is the key to student success! Our weekly newsletter, Tuesday News, contains the most current information including school announcements, upcoming events, important dates, and school celebrations. Tuesday News is emailed to parents on Tuesday afternoons and we upload a copy under the Tuesday News link on our school website. ParentVUE is another valuable communication tool that provides parents and guardians access to information regarding their child’s academic progress, current grades, attendance activity, and class schedules via the internet. You can sign up for ParentVUE during registration on August 22. Both Tuesday News and ParentVUE can be found on our school website at, westorient.gresham.k12.or.us.

I am honored and proud to serve my sixth year as principal of the West Orient Middle School. If I can ever be of assistance, please call me at 503-663-3323 or email catanese@gresham.k12.or.us.  Enjoy the remainder of your summer break and I look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Sincerely,

Elise Catanese

Principal, West Orient Middle School

School Supply List 2017-2018
Toys At School
Toys At School
Students and Parents,
This is a reminder that toys are not allowed at school.  This includes spinners, fidget boxes, slime, etc.  These items are causing a huge distraction in the classroom environment.  If students bring a toy to school, the toy will be brought to the office and students will be able to pick it up at the end of the day.  The second time a toy is brought to school, parents will need to pick it up from the office before or after school.  Thank you in advance for your help with this matter.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Catanese.
Bottle & Can Recycle Fundraiser
Easy Fundraiser
The WOMS GREEN TEAM, "The Green Wolverines" would like to invite you to pick up a blue OBRC (Oregon Bottle Return Center) bag from the school and fill it with your refundable bottles and cans and drop it off back at the school or at any local bottle return center, aka Bottle Drop.  We are also a featured fundraiser on the OBRC website, so please feel free to donate.  All proceeds go to WOMS and the Green Wolverines.  Thanks in advance for your support.    WOMS Green Wolverine Bottle Fundraiser - Click Here

Norovirus Prevention Tips
A Norovirus strain is expected to hit hard this year.  Following is information from our school nurse to help prevent the spread of the Norovirus  The "stomach bug" (an example;  the norovirus) can cause severe onset of vomiting, diarrhea episodes, dehydration & stomach pain/cramping.  The Center for Disease Control recommends:
  • WASH HANDS for 20 seconds, especially before preparing foods & after toileting
  • CLEAN SURFACES - Use bleach-based cleaner or other disinfectant
  • WASH LAUNDRY - Remove & wash soiled linens and clothes immediately
  • USE GLOVES to pick up soiled materials or when wiping down counters
  • STAY HOME WHEN SICK and stay home 2 days more after symptoms of nausea, vomiting, stomach pain stop.
  • Avoid contact directly with others, as the Norovirus can be spread long after symptoms are gone, up to two weeks.
